"NEWQUAY - A SENSE OF PLACE"
NEWQUAY OLD CORNWALL SOCIETY'S 75th Anniversary Year Celebration
|
July 2003| CORNWALL RECORDS OFFICE (CRO)
Cornwall Records Office will be displaying records specially selected for their Newquay connections.
Visitors will be able to research their family history among the old parish registers and other documents
brought especially to the exhibition.
July 2003| CHRIS BLOUNT
Chris Blount, recently retired broadcaster with Radio Cornwall, will feature many of his
unique 'Newquay' recordings taken from the large private collection he has formed over many years.
July 2003| COUNTY HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT SERVICE
This presentation will be based on the Newquay section of the recently published report by
Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Urban Survey (CSUS).
It draws attention to the many fine buildings that although obscured from view, still exist in Newquay.
Expert staff from the service will be on hand to answer the
questions and record information from the public relating to Newquay's historic buildings.
July 2003| INSTITUTE OF CORNISH STUDIES
The Institute of Cornish studies will feature its 'Cornish
Braids' project at the exhibition. Cornish Braids
is a major oral history project that is investigating key strands of cultural activity, in particular work, religion,
politics, leisure and social relationships, with the aim of creating a multigenerational profile of community life
in the twentieth century. Oral history allows people who have been 'hidden from history' to articulate their own
unique feelings and experiences. The public will be able to take part in this fascinating project by recording
their own memories and thoughts.
September 2003| THE ROYAL CORNWALL MUSEUM
The Royal Cornwall Museum has loaned two unique artifacts which have never before been shown together in Newquay. The items, a cinerary urn and ritual battle-axe, date from the Bronze age, some 4,000 years ago. The urn was one of the first to be discovered virtually complete when it was unearthed by a workman in a Barrow at Glendorgal in 1832. The small and finely polished Battle-Axe was found with a skeleton in a barrow at Trevelgue Head on Porth Island.
Curator of Human History, Anna Tyacke, will be available to discuss and record items brought in on exhibition day, as part of The Portable Antiquities Scheme. September 2003| SILVANUS TREVAIL SOCIETY
Silvanus Trevail the famous Victorian pioneering architect was responsible for a number of Newquay's
important buildings, the Headland Hotel being among the best known. Learn all about him, his buildings, his ambitious plans for Newquay, his life and his strange and tragic end. "He was a driven man and he drove himself to self-destruction."
September 2003| CORNWALL FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY
The Cornwall Family History Society, a registered
non-profit charity, aims to become a ‘centre of excellence’ encouraging research into Cornish family history; it was formed in 1976 and now has over 5000 active members.
